Our grapes have been following the news and they’ve decided to take a stand on the Iran war: They’re against it. But they are issuing a new call: Sit down and share a glass of Pinot Noir. In the words of the 11th century Persian Poet Omar Khayyam (depicted above): A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread—and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness— Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow!” We’re not expecting a diplomatic picnic anytime soon. President Trump and Iran’s leadership are both famously abstinent, though we’ll happily offer up our finest case of wine if it will achieve world peace. But our grapes argue that this has been their great contribution to civilization: They have brought people together for thousands of years, lowering barriers, building warmth and good feelings. That was certainly what Omar Khayyam argued in his Rubaiyat, one of the great epic poems of all time: I often wonder what the Vintners buy One half so precious as the Goods they sell. As if to say, even the maker may never again possess something quite as valuable as what he has just placed in another’s hands.
